What is an AI SDR?

An AI SDR builds lead lists, does research on them, writes the cold outreach copy and runs the sequence. Then it checks the inbox and responds to the clients until a target is met (meeting booked, app signup). While most of the vendors emphasize the volume as benefit, I do not agree, because people archive these robotic sounding emails in 20 milliseconds. The right approach for an AI SDR should be that it goes deep, not wide.

Hi, I am Eduard Klein. I advise CEOs, founders and boards on AI Business Strategy. I screened the market, 140 posts, hundreds of hours of YouTube video and used and tested many tools in the last months, then I built my own AI SDR.

You consider using an AI SDR and want to understand: What is it and what is it not and if it's real enough to buy or make? And if it could just replace your junior sales reps in the company? I want to give you my perspective on what I think that "AI SDR" stands for, the meaning after I built one:

What an AI SDR is:

  • An outbound agent that sources leads, does research, writes sequences, sends emails, does email inbox triage

  • A multi channel cold outbound agent to generate leads and prospects

  • An assistant to the junior sales rep / human SDRs or human SDR teams

  • A semi autonomous agentic system that books meetings with your ideal clients

  • A research assistant that collects buyer data and signals to help you find the right angle for the cold outreach to your prospects

  • A support for your sales team to increase productivity

  • A system that will overwhelm your sales team and stretch your IT team to their limits

  • A concept that gets priced in the market more like labor than a tool subscription (high prices)

  • An automated workflow/agentic system that needs human-in-the-loop intervention

  • A helping hand with following up until the prospects hate you or schedule a meeting

  • A system that qualifies ideal clients customers out of huge data sets

  • A LinkedIn outreach and research tool

  • A sales process workflow tool

  • A software system you do not understand fully and can generate costs you never expected (Risks involved)

  • A threat to companies like SalesForce or HubSpot

  • Hope to scale your company faster for lower cost with less headcount

  • A productivity booster for your GTM/sales team and the Sales Manager

  • A technology that uses natural language processing

  • A software that replies to customers in natural language

  • The hope that the high investment will bring ROI soon

  • A promise that it speeds up the sales cycle in the sales process

  • The possibility to handle objections automatically and only get the "hot" leads to schedule a meeting

  • A nightmare for sales leaders that do not understand the "AI thing"

  • A threat to society because of the people feeling anxious about losing their job because of these agents (which will not happen in that way I guess)

  • The first automated sales system that will also do phone calls (your clients will block and ignore)

  • A way to reduce the time spent for administration and data entry and instead invest it in learning how AI messes up with human communication and the endless attempt to make sense of this weird thing they think will become AGI

  • A possible automatic onboarding process for new clients that buy software products (that will soon crash because the agents take over the software market and nobody needs a GUI to be onboarded on.)

  • an idea/vision of an autonomous replacement of a junior sales rep (while I think that this will not happen as LLMs are the dumbest employee you ever had in your company. They need so much management to get good results, maybe this changes in the future)

And what it is not:

  • An Inbound Site agent that qualifies site visitors, responds to incoming leads until you ask it for

  • A Sequencer that sends emails or LinkedIn requests with an LLM on the top, even if they claim

  • A B2B data platform with added AI functionality on the top (like apollo, zoominfo)

  • A system that finally solved "personalization"

  • An automatic system that is equal to human judgement

  • A hope that it will also do your meetings while you sip on a cocktail in Bali listening to podcasts on how to make millions with faceless YouTube videos.

  • A CRM like the ones you know, because, I guess, you will not need them anymore when the agents do the work

  • A replacement for you, dressing up and having a fantastic face-to-face meeting with a human

  • What your sales team thinks what it is

  • A subscription pricing you were used to from software like Instantly with a flat fee per month and some credits

  • The writer for your Linkedin posts that work in 2026 (until someone builds it)

  • Something that can engage humans like humans can

  • An improvement of your conversion rates, just because now you use LLMs

  • A replacement for your Gmail or Outlook email inboxes

  • A guarantee for more revenue or deliverability

  • A liberation from high cognitive work. It needs the highest cognitive work level you've ever done in a short period of time to maintain the agent system.

  • A fight AI SDR vs Human SDR. The solution might be collaboration.

  • A replacement for an SDR with AI

  • The solution to all your sales problems and bringing world peace
